The Business Alliance for Protecting the Pacific Coast (BAPPC) is a coalition of over 8,250 businesses and entrepreneurs in California, Oregon, and Washington who oppose offshore drilling.
The Business Alliance for Protecting the Pacific Coast (BAPPC) is the leading business voice opposing new and expanded oil and gas development off the U.S. West Coast. Offshore exploration and drilling threaten the viability of our coastal economies, posing unacceptable and unnecessary risks to our businesses and the lifestyles of our customers and employees. BAPPC works with local, regional, state and national stakeholders to advocate for permanent protections from offshore drilling.

BAPPC was created in response to efforts by the federal administration to encourage new fossil fuel exploration and production off California, Oregon, and Washington, despite efforts by these states to expand renewable energy technologies and protect their coastal economies from the ravages of offshore oil & gas.

Our Pacific Coast by the Numbers
In stark opposition to the Pacific Coast’s ongoing economic transition towards renewable energy sources, the federal government is calling to expand fossil fuel development off our coast.
Because offshore drilling is fundamentally at odds with our coastal economy and way of life, and because our thriving businesses are reliant upon healthy ocean ecosystems, BAPPC members oppose any new offshore oil or gas development off California, Oregon, and Washington. The Pacific coast economy (California’s alone is the fourth-largest in the world), is inextricably tied to clean coastal waters and beaches, as well as a stable climate. The Pacific coast boasts some of the most spectacular coastal areas in the world. Residents and people from all over the world – over 150 million visitors annually – come here to fish, hike, kayak, surf, wine and dine, and enjoy our beaches. Our region’s coastal economy contributes over 650,000 jobs and $54 billion annually to the nation’s economy.
Fighting to protect our multi-billion dollar ocean-based economies and local suppliers.
Ocean-based recreation and tourism alone contribute almost $240 billion annually to the GDP, and in California provide more jobs than any other state in the country. Meanwhile, commercial and recreational fisheries on the Pacific Coast are valued at billions of dollars and deliver healthy and sustainable seafood for millions of people. All of this far outweighs any potential jobs or economic gains that could ever be provided by offshore fossil fuel production.
Drilling poses unacceptably high risks for our communities.
Drilling increases the likelihood of a devastating oil spill, which can shut down fisheries, close beachside businesses, shutter harbors and major ports, and deter campers and tourists from visiting our beautiful coastline. California, Oregon, and Washington have, in fact, taken positions to intentionally forgo any revenue from new offshore oil and gas development for over 50 years due to the unacceptably high risk, and have instead focused on developing clean renewable energy.
